This is a day I never thought would come. I only own 20% of
the hardback and paperback books I used to keep in my home. I've saved all my
reference works, including the 20 volume Oxford English dictionary.
However, when I got disabled, I bought a stand for my iPad
and read all my books on its screen. This would have, once, been unthinkable. I
bought a paperback at Costco months ago and haven't read it. Instead I go to
Book Bub and buy books for $.99.
You have to understand that books made me who I am. With
serious ADHD, the only break I got from the runaway train inside me was when I
was caught up in a narrative. It was always my desire to own more and more
books so I could show off my love for them.
Amazon changed all that. I have so many books saved in the
cloud that sometimes it surprises me.
The next time I move, I'll have even less books with a spine
or stitching. Amazon changed my life.
When people come into my home in the future, they'll have no
idea how much I celebrated reading as one of the best things in my life. I
don't love books less, but my concepts of how to keep them has morphed into a
new reality.
