In 1968, as a UPI reporter in New Hampshire, I spent a day driving around Lenore Romney, Mitt Romney's mother. It was a delightful day and I was deeply impressed by her integrity. It was a great day for me. I was 23 and wished I'd had her to guide me in my upbringing. Her husband, George Romney was the Governor of Michigan and a no-nonsense, straight talking man. He was someone you could respect. Therefore there is no surprise that Mitt Romney spoke out to register how sleazy he thought Trump and his colleagues looked in the Mueller Report. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and one understands how appalled Romney was. He is the only Republican to speak out on this. It would be lucky for America if he ran for President in the primary against Trump. I love the way he sings the last verse of America. O Beautiful for Patriots Dreams that see beyond the Years, thy Alabaster Cities Gleam undimmed by human tears.</div>

For many years I hiked the Backbone Trail and its offshoots in Southern California. Then I owned a horse (a thoroughbred-warmblood) and rode trails north of La Canada. Especially in the hikes I felt rejuvenated and gained insights into problems that bedeviled me. Now that I'm disabled, I take pleasure in books by the Hillermans (Tony, the father, and Anne, his daughter). They write about members of the Navajo Tribal Police and how nature shapes so much of the way these individuals (Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito) feel tied into nature as they go about detecting. They gain insights and renewal from their Navajo way of looking at the world. But, it isn't just Navajos (the Dine) who can gain from this. I frequently felt the world was lifted from my shoulders and I gained understanding from these hikes. Perhaps, it might be the same for you.</div>

As a disabled person, I care about what happens to people like me. I'm retired with a pension, but know that younger people with disabilities need to have jobs to support themselves. The most visible program that was cut by the Secretary of Education was the Special Olympics, but some many Americans were upset with that decision, that the administration had to back down and restore funding for the program. But there are a lot of cuts in the works by the Trump Administration that will take away funding for the disabled who want to work. Oliver Wendell Holmes said "to live is to function." In this concept is the idea that people not only want earn money, but also feel like they are contributing to our society. Why Trump would be against this positive concept, I cannot fathom. Good Presidents have empathy and the ability to help others thrive and contribute. This does not seem to be the case today.</div>

Over the last ten days someone has burned three Black churches in one Louisiana Parish.<br />
In a song written two days after 9/11 Alan Jackson wrote "Where Were You" and it contained the following:" I know Jesus and I talk to God and I remember from when I was young<br />
Faith, Hope, and Love were the good things he gave us<br />
And the greatest is Love."<br />
If Jesus is about one primary thing its about Love.<br />
My values come out of Methodist Sunday School and there's a song that I remember. It's called "Jesus loves the little children"; Black and Yellow, Brown and White.It talks about how they're equal in his sight.<br />
As far as the Pentecostals go, the Editor of the Christian Century, who created the word "Pentecostal" said these people who supported Trump could no longer claim this mantle. They were not what he would consider Pentecostal anymore. Hatred is fueled by Trump who has given white supremacists what they need to operate, with no fear of being prosecuted. I'm stuck with my Sunday School Values which help me survive the Trump presidency. I hold out the hope that America will once again be what I thought it was. </div>

If you've looked at the polls about Trump's popularity, you may have noticed that a majority of the American people still do not approve of Trump's presidency. The four page, mini summation of the report by William Barr (which people thought has settled the question of whether Trump engaged in obstruction of justice) seemed settled with Barr's little roundup, even though Mueller said he could not decide on the obstruction of justice issue ,Barr put on his cheerleader outfit on and thought that would end the problem. Now, some members of Mueller's team have told associates that individual conclusions summarized by members of the Mueller team, which should have been made public, were not mentioned. The reason they've been talking about this is because a majority of the American people believe Trump is a terrible president. Any comment by a lackey of Trump is not going to change their minds. He's a racist pig. People who have tried to brief him say he has the attention span of a squirrel. He has a limited view of American democracy and doesn't care who he hurts in his off the cuff decisions. The majority will despise him no matter what ends his presidency. 54 per cent of the American people aren't stupid.</div>

First: This is not a macho thing. This is something that could have happened to a lot of strong women I know.<br />
Second: This is not a victory lap, because, if anything, it's a chronicle of failure.<br />
I've been disabled for ten years. The only way I can walk is if I put diclofenac sodium on my body which eventually will lead me to kidney dialysis.<br />
If you're disabled, you know that it can't help pissing you off. You can't help hating that your body is failing you.<br />
On Sunday I got tired of looking at the ivy on the other guys fence and knew if it jumped into the tree by contact with a branch it would destroy the tree. That already happened with the guy's ivy on the other side of my backyard.<br />
So I took out my ladder and some big shears and began to get rid of the guy's ivy. I, of course fell over backwards and bloodied my scalp. Since I have cervical spondylosis. These two situations don't go well together. My wife is a UCLA Medical School Professor Emeritus and after it was pointed out how dumb I am, she took me to the emergency room. Luckily a cat scan showed that I'd survived without having the two things affecting each other. However, my wife t feels that stupidity was the cause of the whole thing. So, I ask you, was this just stupidity? Or was it positive thinking?<br />
The use of words like asshole or jerk should not be included in your response</div>

Barr believes that if it isn't written down that the President can't do something, there is nothing preventing a President from doing what he wants.(No wonder Trump was eager to put Barr in as Attorney General). To take this to its logical conclusion, there is nothing written down which says a President can't commit murder. Therefore Barr believes that Trump could commit murder and not be charged for it. This is the man who interpreted Mueller's report for the American people Are you getting this ridiculous concept of the Imperial Presidency. Barr turned out to be the man who extended presidential power in extraordinary ways. I don't believe the founders, or the framers of the Constitution would have accepted this concept. It is absurd in the extreme. There are a lot of people from Jefferson to Washington who are rolling over in their graves because of this absurd notion. In my mind there's a question of where this leads the country I love. If I could get Medicare in Canada, I'd be headed for British Columbia today. I'm disabled so I can't leave this country, but I'm feeling like an awful fool for letting Barr make these decisions. I love America. I'm a Mayflower descendant whose eyes tear up when I hear the National Anthem, but I'm feeling pretty bad about what's happening in Washington.</div>

We need to see the Mueller Report in its totality. Attorney General Barr got his job by sending Trump an analysis that the president had vast powers (an unusual position held by a man who wanted to be attorney general). His analysis of the Mueller Report fits with his earlier analysis that got him the AG job. But Mueller explicitly said his report did not exonerate the president of obstruction of justice. Therefore a cloud hangs over Barr's analysis. The sooner we see the whole report(allowing for redactions of grand jury testimony) the sooner a majority of Americans can feel justice has been done </div>

In the age of Trump there have been many heroes, but the greatest of all was Rod Rosenstein. After the recusal of the Attorney General from the investigation, the investigation of low life Donald Trump was placed in Rosenstein's hands. Instead of picking some slime ball, he picked a man whose integrity no one could question, Robert Mueller. I think it was fascinating that people talked about<br />
Attorney General William Barr and Rosenstein sifting through the mountains of evidence included in the report the other night. My last living hero was John McCain. Now my favorite living hero is Rod Rosenstein. God Bless him for his courage.</div>

With the Presidency Of Ronald Reagan, The Republicans modified certification rules and cut appropriations to the FAA. Until that time, The FAA had enough people to work on the certification of new airplanes. After the Republicans cut their budgets, the FAA had to count on employees of the aircraft companies in order to certify the safety of an aircraft. The FAA was especially close to Boeing. Most of the safety tests on the 737 Max were done by Boeing employees. The concept of the Fox guarding the henhouse was in high gear. A lot of the world looks on FAA certification before they decide a plane should be added to their fleet. As we've seen the comparisons of the two aircraft having identical problems shows that the inherent problems in Boeing's software on the 737 Max shows what happens when federal agencies are intentionally defanged. Boeing had been promising a fix on the software components since the first plane went down. Even last week the head of Boeing talked with Trump about keeping the aircraft flying in the US. It reminds me or WWII when Glen Curtis's planes were so poorly put together that Pilots blamed Curtis for the deaths of pilots that flew his planes. The Republicans would love to reduce the power of federal agencies, not caring whether a lot of deaths might be the result of letting bad planes in the air. I will never trust flying a 737 Max. I might suggest you ask what planes are flying to the places you want to travel to. If you hear 737 Max, I would suggest you not fly on that plane.</div>

I have a friend who is one of the finest people I've ever known. He is Latino and a gardener. Last year when his wife was going through cancer treatment I helped him out financially. This summer (if I'm able to function) I'll be helping his high-school-age sons out with English grammar and composition. He explained to me today that a compadre in Mexico is close to a family and that person steps in to help a family. I can't tell you how much this means to me. Oliver Wendell Holmes said "to live is to function." Helping people out was why I was a college professor. When I was a University Vice President there the number of African Americans was equal to that of Latinos. Now the school is 65 per cent Latino. I asked a colleague where the Black students go to school. She said they don't go, which made me quite sad. But getting back to my compadre, I feel so good talking with him. He has told me how wonderful his father was and I told him the billboard that said Latino to me said "leche" (milk) on it. Trump is a dickhead who doesn't understand how many great Latinos I've known. He would rather stir up race hatred than say positive things abour our great Latino immigrants</div>

In Glendale, CA, every year on April 24, the flags are lowered to half mast on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. This occurs because a great many residents are Armenians. They were wiped out in a Holocaust in 1917 when the Turks brought to an intensity when they killed all the men, women and children in all the Armenian villages. A movie about this ghastly extermination has just appeared on Amazon. It is called "The Promise" and it is not for the faint hearted. The brutality is unbelievable and heart wrenching,<br />
In the Middle East America has had one group we could always trust: The Kurds. The Turks want to go in and kill all of them and seemed thrilled when Trump pulled America out of Syria. With us gone, the Turks were ready go in and wipe them out.<br />
I've knew some nice Turks when I lived in Germany, but there must be a lot of Turks full of hate. When they move against the Kurds, will we step in to stop another slaughter?</div>

<br />
<br />
When their Dreamliner was grounded, Boeing lost $20 million and three months of down time for that plane. Today Boeing faces something disastrous. The Dreamliner never crashed and killed people, but the 737 Max has crashed twice killing everyone aboard. The stock, of course, has fallen 11 per cent, but that is only a reflection of the reality. Boeing 737Max is a dangerous airplane that no country is allowing it to fly. There is a lack of room in the front of the plane that will limit certain fixes.<br />
In some ways this sounds like the story of VW. Is it possible that none of the aerospace engineers who'd gone through a tough academic discipline to arrive at Boeing never expressed some concerns about the design. Either they weren't as smart as you might expect, or they were muzzled because Boeing was making a lot of money off the plane. It would be interesting to find out what happened within Boeing as they put this plane together.</div>

All the songs Elvis made famous, from Hound Dog on never showed the beauty of the voice of Elvis. I would have never thought to praise his voice before I heard an album of his hymns. He sings hymns that I've never heard before and his voice is that of an angel, alternately singing in one octave and next another.. I've seldom heard someone who didn't come out of gospel have such a spectacular voice. Give one of those albums a try and you won't believe how much you've missed. There is a purity that doesn't sound like the voice of an addict, more like the voice of one of God's finest followers</div>

Donald Trump, apparently thinking he could change the mind of the Korean Dictator, had Shinzo Abe nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. All the professionals in Intelligence told him Kim Jong Un would never give up his nuclear arsenal, but Trump believes in the art of the deal, so he thought he could pull it off.<br />
What he did win was the venerated Piss Prize, given to presidents who make things worse than their Predecessors had left things. We have the worst trade deficit in history, despite all the tariffs Trump created. The overall trade deficit is 621 million dollars. That is $100 million more than the last year of the Obama presidency.<br />
This, of course, will not be acknowledged by his followers, unless someone on right wing talk radio brings this up. Since Trump's cabinet has already shown that pigs can fly frequently, perhaps there is a chance this is all a dream (and we actually have an honest president).</div>

China is soon bringing out 5G software that is 100 times faster than 4G. We can't say China stole it from us, because we don't have it. Apple won't make a 5G phone because it doesn't know how, therefore why should some one buy an Apple phone in China.<br />
Because I guess Trump was pissed off that China was ahead of us he had Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's leader and its chief financial officer, captured while changing planes in Vancouver.<br />
Some people were waiting around to see her at her seven bedroom, $16 million dollar house the other day while she was holed up in her six bedroom, $6 million dollar house. (all these prices are in loonies, Canadian currency, which is worth less than the dollar these days, but many times it has been worth more than the dollar)<br />
She can travel around the area with a tracking device and has guards which both protect her and make sure she goes to court later. She reminds Canadians that foreigners have bought up property in Vancouver so no regular meddle class folks can live there. As such, the Canadians have mixed feelings about her presence there. I have real questions about her arrest in the first place. </div>

Remember the gangster movies you've seen where a Mobster will own certain Congressmen whose job it is to disrupt a hearing into Mafia actions and murders.<br />
That is what it looked like today as the Republicans made no attempt to get at the truth, but instead spent their five minutes attacking Michael Cohen for what he'd done in the past. Rep. Jordan was like an attack dog looking for red meat instead of the truth. He literally repulsed me as he flailed around looking to score points. It was a depressing sight to see that there aren't any Republicans that want to find out what's really true about the scumbag playing The President these days. The New York Times recently ran a story about what happened to the young men and women who had voted for Romney (an ethical man) and then voted in 2016. They either voted for Democrats or stayed home. There is no young generation for the Republicans. More and More they are looking like a party heading for a cliff.. There are only so many angry old white people in this country, people who can't stand that their segregated world has disappeared.</div>

The women who were working as prostitutes in Florida where Kraft was caught are mostly from the area Chinese call Dong Bei. It's been called Manchuria and Manchukuo when the Japanese held it. The Ming Dynasty (the last dynasty) came from here. At one point they practiced the same kind of Buddhism practiced in Tibet.<br />
The women working there were sending home money to their husbands and children to help keep them alive. The weather there is like the weather in Northern New York (Syracuse and above) a place where companies leave for a better climate. They have been losing universities also.<br />
So the rich men slept with the poorest women in China. Now that's income inequality.</div>

The three greatest voices I've ever heard are: Sam Cooke, Johnny Maestro and Edith Gruberova.<br />
Let's look first at Sam Cooke. His voice was magnificent. He and Mavis Staples were the best singers in gospel. Cooke left gospel (where they say once you leave, you can never go back). He recorded "You Send Me" and he was on the pop charts. He was a wonderful singer who died early after being shot by a motel owner. (It wasn't a hate crime, she was also Black.)<br />
Next we have Johnny Maestro, who never seemed to stay with any group, but it's his voice on "Happy Birthday Baby" Who knows what happened to that man with the great voice. He seemed to disappear.<br />
Next we have the great coloratura soprano, Edith Gruberova, whose voice on the "Queen of the Night Aria" from the Magic Flute by Mozart will make you believe in angels. She now sings bel canto roles but in her youth she was the best singer of that aria. (Whether the Magic Flute can be called an opera is questioned by operatic scholars, but if's only ever performed by opera singers).</div>

Perhaps I don't have the right to speak about this, but I will try anyway. When I first read about Pope Francis, I was so impressed, he became my hero. As a Christian, I always like to read about those who go into the ghetto to help others less fortunate. I still respect him, but I realize his papacy is on the line now. What I have to say doesn't mean I've lost respect but that if anyone is going to deal with these atrocities it's going to have to be him. If he can't do it, then I blame the entrenched powers in the church that are against fixing this. I have often wondered how a church survives the never ending headlines on priestly and Cardinal abuses of children. Since Jesus is my strength and my redeemer, I don't care how believers get to know him. But today, I would not put my daughter in the hands of a priest. I'm going to pray for Pope Francis to fix this.</div>

Today Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, was charged with soliciting prostitutes in Florida. And they have tapes. You wondered how long it would take an elderly guy like Tom Brady to get under Kraft's skin. Every time he sits in his special seats he looks out and has to watch an aging Brady function as his Quarterback. Since he's only six years older than his buddy, Trump, it must be embarrassing that a Playboy Playmate is in love with Trump. but not with him. So he proved he had the balls and battled forward with a hooker. Now no one will laugh any more at him.</div>

Vice President Pence and other members of Trump's administration and family are getting the cold shoulder in Europe. America' which once created the Marshall Plan, with money that helped European countries rebuild after the Second World War, is no longer thought about as the American Way.<br />
The American Way is now represented by our dunce of a president, a man considered odious and stupid by many Europeans. Ever since our involvement in seemingly unending wars in the Middle East we've been less admired, but Trump has taken Europe's view of America to a new low. I wouldn't wear a Make America Great Again hat if you're visiting the Continent. You just might get spit on.</div>

As you've probably read I'm disabled, but there are things that help me get through the day. Because my wrists are shot, I use braces to exercise my arms. One of my braces says "Mueller" on it. When my anger at Trump runs high, I look at this brace and think we'll get our country back. Of such small things is hope composed of.<br />

In Thomas L. Friedman's column in The New York Times he talks about important changes to the College Board Exams. This can replace all the Advanced Placement Classes students cram for and then forget. I am speaking as a professor emeritus from a Cal State.<br />
1. The knowledge test on our constitution. Most of my students didn't know how many senators California had. much less the concept of presidential succession when a president dies, much less what's in the Bill of Rights. And yet these people are allowed to vote. If you're going to be tested on this, that will make up for what they didn't learn in the Los Angeles School System( I had students who couldn't read)<br />
<br />
2. The second test will involve computer science and coding. If they aren't forced to learn about computers before they go to college they may never learn and they'll be unemployable (In the CSU I taught at the math requirement could be filled by taking an advertising class).<br />
<br />
Since all students in China have to know calculus to get into a university. this is not too much to ask.</div>

One of worst thing about reading American History is finding out the country you love was capable of extreme cruelty to those Americans who were not white. Mary Glickman has written an incredibly moving account of Trail of Tears, called an Undisturbed Peace. Andrew Jackson was an evil President and it’s no surprise that another evil President, Donald Trump, made a joke about it the other day . The Cherokee dressed like white Americans and had a city called Echota where the homes looked like those in Boston or Philadelphia. Despite this their land was taken and they were driven across the Mississippi,with many of them dying along the way.Other tribes had children and adults set in burning piles as they succumb ed to Cholera. This barbarity continues today as I saw the Onondaga, a tribe of the Iroquois demeaned outside the reservation by being called “chief.” Just as the racists call blacks “Dr.” this designation demeans the American c called by this slur.<br />
